As per The Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, it is considered essential to own a valid driver's license. It is an official document certified by the Indian Government as a legal proof to permit you to drive your vehicles on public roads. Having a license alone is not enough as you need to renew or update one as soon as it expires.

What is a driving license renewal form?

A driving license renewal form is form number 9 which a vehicle owner needs to fill and submit at the RTO office while renewing or updating their driving license. This KYC document is very important and useful for the regional transport officials to understand the specifics of the vehicle owner’s current driving license. You need to submit this form along with other documents mentioned below while renewing your driving license.

What is the procedure of renewing a driving license?

You need to submit a duly filled driving license renewal form along with the set of documents at the regional transport office in your area. You can download the driving license renewal form either online or can collect it from the nearest RTO office at your convenience. It will take around 20 days to receive the renewed driving license after submitting your application form. 

What is the fee applicable for renewing a driving license?

It is important to note that a driving license is a document that is issued by the RTO (regional transport office). So, the fees for the same may vary from one state to another. While renewing your driving license, you need to refer to your respective state's RTO office or portal to get complete clarity on the fee charged in your state. However, the old fee for driving license renewal is Rs. 50 and the revised fee is Rs. 200.

What is the validity of a driver’s license renewal?

The validity of a permanent driver's license is 20 years or until the owner reaches the age of 50. For those whose license has already been expired, a grace period of 30 days without penalty id provided for renewal. If you decide to renew your license after 30 days, you would be charged an applicable penalty. Those who do not renew their license within 5 years of expiry will have to apply for a new one.

What are the documents required for renewing a driving license?

  • A photocopy of your original driving license.
  • Duly filled driving license renewal application form (Form 9). You can download the same from your state's RTO/RTA portal.
  • Declaration form no 1, duly signed by you, stating that you are physically healthy to drive a vehicle.
  • Form 1A, which specifies you are medically fit, in case you apply to renew your transport vehicle license.
  • Age proof such as PAN card, passport, Voter's ID card, etc.
  • Proof of address or residence such as passport, electricity bill, phone bill, lease agreement, etc.
  • Passport size photographs.
  • In the case, if you If you have changed your state, then the above- mentioned rule applies here too. In addition to that, you will also need to submit a no-objection certificate issued by RTO/RTA from where your driving license was issued.
  •  If you have changed your current address, you need to register the same within 1 month at the RTO/RTA at which the initial and original license was issued, or at the nearest regional office.
